At Monumo, the team is very excited to be one of 13 challengers taking on ABB's Crack the Cost Challenge 2026, hosted by ABB Motors and Drives North America and SynerLeap, in partnership with ABB Accelerator. Over the next ten days we'll be alongside ABB's engineers in Track 2, listening and learning about their design-to-cost challenge, then working out where our proven expertise in multi-objective optimisation of electric machines can do the most for ABB and the customers they build for. World EV Day: the cost of an electric car is largely decided before production begins This year's #WorldEVDay theme is driving down the cost of motoring. Most of that conversation is about battery prices, charging and purchase incentives. Less of it is about the design stage, where the majority of a vehicle's cost is fixed, years before the first unit is built. Our work with a large automotive supplier took a core powertrain component design process down from 6-month to four weeks, using 35% less magnet material and saving 17% on the bill of materials. Savings are often driven by a reduction in the amount of rare earth materials with no loss of performance. Engineering AI makes this possible by evaluating millions of viable designs for cost, efficiency and performance before a team commits to one.
